By Mike Spieker CRARY, N.D. (May 26, 2018) – Nick Omdahl claimed his fifth career Devils Lake Speedway win Saturday night with the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprints / Canadian-American Outlaw Sprints. Kevin Robertson, Lance Schill and Daniel Aberle claimed the WISSOTA Dirt Track Racing wins, Colton Laber won the Pure Stocks Several cautions slowed the Sprint Car feature, but once the race had a long green flag stretch, Omdahl pulled away from the field. Omdahl led the race with little challenge until the final five laps. Wade Nygaard, who was one of the few drivers running the high groove, reeled in Omdahl in lapped traffic and pulled to within two car lengths.
Omdahl moved up to take the groove away from Nygaard with two to go, which sealed the deal for the East Grand Forks, Minn. driver. Omdahl took the win over Nygaard, Chris Ranten, Jordan Adams and Blake Egeland. “I can just run so much harder here. I’m just not scared to go into the corner here like I am Grand Forks,” laughed Omdahl in victory lane. It had been a crazy past couple of days for Omdahl trying to get his Ostrich powerplant ready to go in time for NOSA’s big three-race weekend. “My motor got off the dyno at nine o’clock Thursday night, my dad got it home at eight in the morning. We got it fired at 3:30 Friday afternoon and went to the track,” he explained. Kevin Robertson dominated the WISSOTA Late Model feature. The Enderlin, N.D. driver started third on the grid, but led all 25 trips around the high-banked quarter-mile en route to the victory. The best racing was going on back in the pack. Outside front row starter, Travis Robertson, quickly drifted to the tail of the field as he tried to run the high groove. Travis Robertson was nearly a half lap behind the race leader and his uncle, Kevin Robertson, five laps in, but eventually Travis made the high side work. One by one, Travis picked off cars. With two to go, drove around the outside of last week’s Late Model winner, Mike Balcaen, and had his sights set on Kevin Robertson for the lead. However, Kevin Robertson had too large of a cushion out front as he went on to take the win. Travis Robertson and Mike Balcaen rounded out the podium. Lance Schill picked up the WISSOTA Midwest Modified win after one of the best races seen all night. Schill, who started fourth on the grid, moved into second on the opening lap as Jaden Varnson led the field. Schill caught Varnson on lap two, which triggered a 10-lap fight for the lead. Schil threw everything he had at Varnson, but each time Varnson had an answer. At the halfway point, it looked as though Schill was going to take the point as he attempted a slide job on Varnson, but Varnson kept his foot to the floor and used his momentum to regain the lead. With eight to go, Randy Thompson and Jason Halverson made it a four car race for the lead. Off turn four, Schill found an opening on the low side to finally clear Varnson for the lead. Once out front, Schill pulled away from the field and went on to take the win. Austin Hunter, Varnson, Thompson and Halverson rounded out the top five. Daniel Aberle raced to his second WISSOTA Street Stock win of the season at Devils Lake. Aberle started sixth to challenge Brandon Miller for the lead. Aberle and Miller raced side by side for several consecutive laps before Miller looped his No. 5 machine, which gave Aberle the race lead. Aberle held the lead through a pair of restarts to pick up the win. Colton Laber raced his way to victory lane in the Pure Stocks. Next Saturday night, Farmers Union Oil Company presents the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Outlaw Sprints vs. the Canadian-American Outlaw Sprints, plus Wissota Late Models and the Professional Dirt Series. Green flag drops at 7pm.
