By Mike Spieker CRARY, N.D. (September 2, 2018) – The 17th season of racing at Devils Lake Speedway came to a close on Sunday evening. Rain on Saturday night forced the postponement of the WISSOTA Street Stock and Midwest Modified features, setting up a big season finale at the high-banked quarter-mile dirt oval. Jonny Carter of Lisbon swept both main events in the Street Stocks. In the regularly scheduled event, Carter inherited the lead on lap five. Kyle Anderson ran behind him in the second position, but Anderson had his hands full with point leader, Daniel Aberle.
Aberle got by Anderson with two laps to go and looked to set his sights on Carter for the lead, but Carter was a distant 2.5 seconds ahead as the white flag waved. Carter took the win over Aberle and Steven Richards, who passed Anderson on the final lap. Thirteenth place starter, Josh Worrall rounded out the top five. The make-up feature similar to the first. Ninth starter, Carter, took the lead on lap five before cruising to the win over Aberle by two seconds. Anderson, Greg Jose and Richards rounded out the top five. The Street Stock track championship went to Aberle. Langdon hotshoe, Lance Schill, picked up his fourth Devils Lake Speedway win of the season, along with the track championship. Schill, who is in pursuit of the WISSOTA Midwest Modified national championship, took the lead on lap one and led the remainder of the race. However, it wasn’t easy for Schill in the closing laps. Heavy pressure from another WISSOTA national championship contender, Scott Bintz, made for an exciting finish. Bintz, who started eighth, moved up to second on lap five and looked to take the point on the final lap. The lead duo was side by side on the final lap in what came down to a drag race to the checkers. At the line, Schill edged out Bintz by a mere 0.040 seconds to take the win by a matter of inches. Jess Brekke, Jaden Varnson and Jason Schuh rouned out the top five. In the make-up feature, Bintz had a little extra last lap magic. The Jamestown driver passed polesitter and race leader, Brekke on the final lap to claim his 13th win of the season. Brekke, who led 18 of the 20 laps, came home second, followed by Grant Hall, Schill, and Varnson. A.J. Davenport started eighth and won the Pure Stock feature. Colten Laber was crown the Pure Stock track champion. Drew Wilhelmi won all seven Circle Track Mini Truck features at Devils Lake in 2018 and collected the track championship.
