By Mike Spieker CRARY, N.D. (July 28, 2018) – A season-high 34 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were checked in Saturday night for the $2,000-to-win Golden Hammer Classic. The field of 34 was whittled down to the fastest 24 for the 40-lap A-main. Scott Bintz and Austin Hunter led the field to the green flag with Hunter grabbing the early lead. Restarts were the key for 10th place starter, Preston Carr. After jumping into the top five by lap five, Carr used the lap-seven restart to move into the third position.
Carr then went to work on Bintz for second. Following Hunter around the high side, Carr got by Bintz, who was running the extreme low groove, on lap 12. The low groove began to go away on Bintz as the laps wore on as he faded back to the fifth position. Hunter, Carr, Matt Schow, Reise Stenberg, and Lance Schill made up the top five at the halfway point. Things began to heat up in the second half of the race as the top five were separated by just eight car lengths. Carr, who was glued to the rear bumper of Hunter, began to work the low side. Hunter saw the nose of Carr below him and went to the bottom to take the line away. Behind them, Schill began to move his way forward. Schill got by both Stenberg and Schow to take over third as he set his sights on Carr for second. Schill used the highside of the speedway to get by Carr for second as the top three now ran within three car lengths of each other. Both Schill and Carr split Hunter to take over the top two positions with 10 to go. A lapped car running the high side was exactly what Carr needed to clear Schill for the point. Schill made contact with that lapped car, which allowed Schow to move into second. With five laps to go, Schow was battling with Schill when he slid off the turn one embankment to bring out the caution. Stenberg and Ryan Schroeder were the big movers on the restart, moving from fifth to second and seventh to third, respectively. Stenberg was all over Carr as the white flag flew. Stenberg entered turn one in the middle of the race track, but Carr had the momentum coming off the corner. Carr held off Stenberg and Schroeder to take the big payday home to Carrington, N.D. Schill and Eric Haugland rounded out the top five. Daniel Aberle started fifth on the grid for the WISSOTA Street Stock feature, but grabbed the lead on lap two. Aberle led the remainder of the 20-lap feature to pick up the win by just under a second over Greg Jose. Dan McNamee, Steven Richards, and Bradon Miller rounded out the top five. Tony Bundy recorded his third consecutive Pure Stock feature win. The Balta, N.D. driver started dead last on the field in 10th, but sliced through the field to take the lead with three to go. The Circle Track Mini Truck feature win went to Drew Wilhemi. Racing at Devils Lake Speedway continues next Saturday night, featuring the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprints and Canadian-American Outlaw Sprints, plus the Professional Dirt Series. Green flag drops at 7pm.
